Welcome back, dear friends, to another iteration of the FORA / squared exercise. It has been a while! I am working hard to continue this effort, whilst occupying so many other spaces— I love this space though, and all of the friends we find here. [though if anyone ever wants to lend an informal hand, reach out! This Gadigal/Turrbal interstate malarkey is eyebag-inducing]
Our latest friend— although he is also a l-o-o-ng friend— is the furniture maker and wobbly doll, Hugh Duke-Freney, and his installation OFF-TOPIC.
Hugh Duke-Freney is a Meanjin-based furniture maker and crafter. OFF-TOPIC is an assembled tableau of his most recent experiments in 'imitating simple things, and making them my own way (a little wobbly').
Please join us at 75 Vulture St, West End, at 6pm on June 1st, for a quiet launch and celebration of the new work. More details can be found here
Below, find Duke-Freney’s practice journal, as well as a collection of individuals, known and unknown to him personally, who have affected his practice. Use this newsletter as an entree, an early morning dip, before the surf of June 1st.
Submissions for the FORA / squared space can be made through the application portal here. Textual submissions to the FORA website— reactions to current or past projects, or reactions to wider landscapes— can be made here.

What FORA wants
The FORA newsletter seeks to bring forward the intertextuality that we reside in, and the inextricable ways in which art and life are linked. That is an obvious point, but one that must be constantly remarked upon, as it is one we are constantly surprised by. To be reminded of these circles is to be drawn back into the fold, equipped with the tools of thinking critically and acting compassionately.
